patients who are unable to breathe on their own and rely on a ventilator. The
DPS can provide part-time or full-time respiratory support to people who would
otherwise require a mechanical ventilator to breathe. Diaphragm pacing (also known as phrenic
pacing) is a method of providing ventilatory support to patients with chronic
respiratory insufficiency who have limited function of their diaphragm, lungs,
and phrenic nerves. It is typically far less expensive than the mechanical
alternative and may provide a significantly higher quality of life.
